GRN Flow in SAP vs ZYNO ERP compares how businesses record and manage goods receipts, inventory updates, purchase orders, invoice verification, and payment workflows. SAP uses transactions such as MIGO and MIRO with structured procurement processes and three-way matching. ZYNO ERP provides an integrated workflow that connects purchasing, inventory, accounting, and approvals, helping businesses reduce manual work, improve visibility, and streamline GRN management across operations.
Businesses using ZYNO Books cut accounting time by 70% and stay 100% ZATCA-compliant — automatically.
GRN, or Goods Receipt Note, is posted in SAP through transaction MIGO once material arrives against a purchase order. The flow runs Purchase Requisition (ME51N) > Purchase Order (ME21N) > Goods Receipt (MIGO) > Invoice Verification (MIRO) > Vendor Payment (F110). GRN updates stock and accounting automatically, and invoices are matched against it before payment is released.

Click any step to see what happens inside SAP at that point.

GRN stands for Goods Receipt Note. It is the record SAP creates the moment material or a service arrives against a purchase order. Warehouse or stores staff confirm what actually landed, in what quantity, and at which storage location, and the system uses that confirmation to update stock and trigger the accounting entries behind it.
Without a GRN, a purchase order stays open on paper but nothing physically changes in the system. The invoice cannot be verified properly, and the vendor cannot get paid through the standard procure to pay cycle.
GRN is the checkpoint that ties what was ordered to what was received. It protects the business from paying for goods that never arrived, and it gives finance a clean trail: purchase order, goods receipt, invoice, payment, each one referencing the one before it.
A department raises a purchase requisition when it needs material or a service. This is an internal request, not yet visible to any vendor. It states what is needed, how much, and by when.
Once approved, the requisition converts into a purchase order. The PO carries vendor details, pricing, delivery terms, and quantity, and it is this document the vendor receives and works against.
The vendor ships the goods according to the PO. At this stage nothing has happened in SAP yet. The delivery is a physical event that the next step will record.
The store or warehouse team posts the receipt using transaction MIGO. The process has four practical parts:
This single posting is what generates the GRN in the system.
Simplify Your GRN Process with ZYNO ERP

Request a Free Demo Explore ZYNO ERPAs soon as MIGO is posted, SAP updates several things automatically. Inventory quantity increases in the relevant plant and storage location. A material document is generated to record the stock movement. Where the item is valuated, an accounting document is also generated, posting entries such as stock account debit and GR/IR clearing account credit.
When the vendor invoice arrives, it is checked in MIRO against both the PO and the GRN. This is the three way match: quantity and price on the invoice must agree with what was ordered and what was actually received. Only after this match holds does the invoice get parked or posted for payment.
Once the invoice clears verification, it becomes an open, due item in the vendor account. Payment is settled either through F110, SAP's automatic payment run, or through a manual payment posting for one off cases.
| Stage | Document | T-code |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase Requisition | PR | ME51N |
| Purchase Order | PO | ME21N |
| Goods Receipt | GRN | MIGO |
| Invoice Verification | Vendor Invoice | MIRO |
| Vendor Payment | Payment Document | F110 |

ZYNO handles the same job without the multi transaction structure SAP uses. Since ZYNO is built as a single connected procurement module, goods receipt happens on the same purchase order record instead of moving through separate screens.
The receiving team opens the PO, enters the quantity received, and confirms the location. Stock and accounting update in the background the moment that entry is saved, so there is no separate posting step equivalent to MIGO.
| Step | SAP | ZYNO |
|---|---|---|
| Goods receipt entry | MIGO transaction, separate screen | Same PO record, or via an AI prompt |
| Invoice matching | Manual three way match in MIRO | AI assisted match with automatic flags |
| Learning curve | Requires T-code and navigation training | No T-codes, guided procurement flow |
| Visibility | Separate stock and accounting reports | Real time dashboard across procurement and finance |
Receiving a different quantity than the PO specifies without adjusting tolerance limits triggers a block at MIGO or later at MIRO.
Posting to the wrong plant or storage location moves stock into the wrong bucket, which then needs a transfer posting to correct.
Open balances sit in the GR/IR clearing account when GRN quantity and invoice quantity never fully reconcile.
Posting a second goods receipt against the same delivery inflates stock and needs a reversal through MIGO cancellation.
These two steps get confused often because both involve checking a purchase order. The toggle below shows what each one actually confirms.

GRN stands for Goods Receipt Note. It is the document generated when materials or services arrive against a purchase order, confirming that the goods have been received.
MIGO is the SAP transaction code used to post a goods receipt. It allows users to select the purchase order, enter quantities, check the storage location, and post the receipt.
It depends on the system configuration, but standard procurement practice links invoice verification to a completed GRN so the three-way match between the PO, GRN, and invoice can be maintained.
GRN is the business document confirming that goods have been received. MIGO is the SAP transaction code used to create and post the GRN.
SAP generates a material document that records the stock movement and, where applicable, an accounting document that records the corresponding entries in the general ledger.
It depends on the item category and system configuration. Most goods and stock items require a GRN, while some service purchase orders may use a service entry sheet instead.
A three-way match compares the purchase order, goods receipt, and vendor invoice to verify that the quantities and prices agree before payment is released.
Once MIGO is posted, the inventory quantity increases at the relevant storage location, and SAP records the stock movement through a material document.
MIRO is used for invoice verification. It checks the vendor invoice against the purchase order and goods receipt before the invoice is parked or posted.
Once MIRO confirms that the invoice matches the PO and GRN, the invoice becomes due for payment. The payment can then be processed through F110 or a manual payment posting.
